Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on 4 April 1972 located in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Her grandmother raised her and she was an only child. Scott was educated at Philadelphia High School for Girls. Upon graduating, Scott enrolled into Temple University. In between two job opportunities as a teacher, she was studying secondary education. She planned on becoming an instructor of English in a secondary school. The dream of becoming an English teacher in high school was shattered when she dropped out of school. Being a poet She began to sing in live poetry recitals. She later teamed along with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to create an ensemble. They ended up collaborating and co-writing You Got Me. She was first outed as an artiste at a Roots Show. After that, she began collaborating with musicians like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. Also, she was an actor during The Canada touring of Broadway musical production Rent. She became the first signed artist for label Hidden Beach Recordings label.
